Employee Retention
Thinking back over the last couple years, I’ve worked with and spoken to many operators that have had great success maintaining their core team members, and others that have struggled to do so. I generally ask the operator, “Why do you think you’re having a hard time keeping good people?” The response is generally to the tune of, “I’m not sure, we have a great culture here.”
As I dive deeper into their operation, I tend to find the same few things over and over again:
-No continuing education program past new hire training: leaves your team feeling like they’re not being invested in and that they’re just another number to you.
-Weak salaries and low hourly wages: leaves team members feeling like there are no financial and professional growth opportunities for them.
-Toxic work environment: poor work culture creating uncomfortable conditions for team members.
Moral of the story, invest in your team's education and growth, it will make them want to come to work for you every day. Pay good people and make sure they feel financially secure working with you so they don’t have to look elsewhere. Training new people is far more expensive than just paying the good ones their worth. Create a company culture that is positive and inviting. This will make people want to stay.
